A substância, garantida a partir da exposição ao sol, é também encontrada em determinados alimentos, como gema de ovo, bife de fígado, salmão selvagem, cogumelos, atum, sardinha e óleo de fígado de bacalhau, entre outros.
Após ajustar diversos fatores de risco para a doença (como idade, peso, tabagismo e por aí vai), pesquisadores do Centro de Ciências da Saúde Pública do Centro Nacional de Câncer no Japão concluíram que altos níveis de vitamina D estão associados a uma redução de aproximadamente 20% na probabilidade de o indivíduo desenvolver qualquer tipo de câncer.
É sempre bom lembrar, porém, que a longa exposição ao sol pode causar o efeito reverso, como o risco de aparecimento de câncer de pele, por exemplo.
